Skin Cancer and Mole Checks in Shepparton – Nurse-Led Outreach Care by Skindepth Dermatology

Living in regional Victoria means enjoying plenty of sunshine, but with that comes an increased risk of sun damage, skin cancer, and changing moles. At Skindepth Dermatology, we’re committed to bringing expert skin cancer screening and mole checks to the Shepparton region and across North-East Victoria through our specialised outreach services.
Why Skin Cancer Checks Matter
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Regular checking for skin cancer can save lives by detecting changes early, often before they become dangerous. In rural and regional communities like Shepparton, Echuca, Wangaratta, and Benalla, access to specialist skin cancer clinic or dermatologist can be limited. That’s why Skindepth Dermatology is proud to offer comprehensive skin and mole checks close to home.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that each year, more than 13,000 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma, and around 1,700 will die from the disease. These figures highlight the critical importance of regular skin checks, not only for detecting melanoma early but also for identifying precancerous lesions and monitoring long-term sun-related skin changes.
Get checked with Nurse Alanna – Your Local Skin Cancer Nurse
Leading our Shepparton outreach service is Nurse Alanna, an experienced dermatology nurse with a special interest in early detection of skin cancer, mole mapping, and sun damage surveillance. Alanna works closely with Skindepth Dermatology’s specialist dermatologists to deliver thorough and accurate skin assessments.
During your appointment, Alanna will:
- Examine your skin using dermoscopy (a specialised tool that allows for detailed mole and lesion assessment)
- Document and photograph any areas of concern
- Provide education about sun safety and skin protection
- Coordinate with our dermatologists for further management or treatment if required
This collaborative nurse-led model means patients can access high-quality, specialist skin care locally, without needing to travel long distances.
What to Expect During Your Mole Check
A mole check or skin cancer screening involves a full skin examination from head to toe. Nurse Alanna will check your skin carefully for any new, changing, or unusual moles and other signs of sun damage such as pigmentation changes, rough patches, or non-healing spots.
During your skin check, you’ll be asked to undress so that your skin can be examined thoroughly. Using a dermatoscope, your clinician will assess moles, freckles, and skin lesions in detail. In some cases, photographs may be taken to track any changes over time, or a small biopsy may be performed to confirm the nature of a suspicious spot. This process ensures accurate early detection and diagnosis of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and can spread quickly if not detected early. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, often slow-growing and caused by cumulative sun exposure, while squamous cell carcinoma can develop more rapidly and may spread if untreated.
If any areas of concern are identified, Nurse Alanna can work with your GP or refer you to a dermatologist for further assessment and treatment.
Skin Checks for Sun Damage and Skin Care
At Skindepth Dermatology, we don’t just focus on skin cancer detection, we also help monitor chronic sun damage. Our sun damage surveillance programs are tailored to individuals who are regularly exposed to the sun, including farmers, tradespeople, and outdoor workers common across Shepparton and North-East Victoria.
Through consistent monitoring, digital mole mapping, and education, we help our patients understand their skin, identify early warning signs, and maintain lifelong skin health.
As part of our ongoing care, we recommend dermatologist-approved products from our Skindepth Suncare and Skincare Collection, featuring a range of daily sunscreens and restorative skincare options designed to protect and repair sun-exposed skin.
By combining regular skin checks, effective protection against UV radiation, and tailored skincare routines, Skindepth Dermatology empowers every patient to protect their skin and reduce skin cancer risk.
