Everything You Need to Know About Rosacea

03-14-2024

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition of the face that presents in many forms and can be characterised through; redness, dilated blood vessels, enlarged pores, papules, flushing and sensitivity.

Common causes

  • Sun damage: The top cause of rosacea is over exposure, or accumulated exposure to harmful UV rays.
  • Demodex mite: This little guy is a normal part of the skins healthy microbiome however are often found in higher numbers than ‘normal’ on individuals that experience active rosacea. When in higher quantities these can trigger an immune response or inflammation in the skin, caused by bacteria associated with the mites.

Can it be cured?

Unfortunately, rosacea is not a curable condition, although there are a variety of treatments and products available to reduce the symptoms, appearance and maintain your skins health.

Treatments for Rosacea

Here at Skindepth Dermatology we offer a range of options to treat rosacea. Using a combined, holistic approach we can help to reduce the symptoms associated with Rosacea as well as reducing the appearance and frequency of flare up. Treatment options include:

Vascular Laser: Our Dermal Clinicians use a gold standard vascular laser to constrict and close the blood vessels. The Laser is attracted to oxyhaemoglobin in the blood vessels and converts to heat energy which then cause the vessels to collapse; therefore, leaving the skin with less redness and a reduction in flushing. The treatment feels like a cold sting, followed by heat. Redness, swelling and bruising often occurs. A course of 3-4 treatments is recommended for optimal results, each spaced 6 weeks apart. Results will differ depending on the severity of the condition, so it’s recommended to book in for a consultation prior to commencing your treatment.

Topical Skincare: Using a skincare range that works specifically on healing and preserving your skins natural microbiome is paramount when targeting inflammatory conditions such as rosacea. One of the most effective skincare brands we have discovered is Biojuve. This range includes a cleanser, Duo Serum system, Supportive complex and 2 moisturisers to suit either normal/oily or normal/dry skin. The use of a vitamin B such as niacinamide is also advisable, we would recommend the Propaira Niacinamide along with the Societe Peptide sheet masks for extra hydration.

Medication & Prescription creams:

There are various oral medications and prescription based creams that can help manage Rosacea. If this is the route you choose to take and would like to discuss these options with one of our Dermatologists, please send a referral through to referrals@skindepth.com.au and our team will be in touch regarding an appointment.
