Planning your first laser treatment or coming in soon? While we always recommend having a tailored consultation with your Dermal Clinician at Skindepth Dermatology, we also want to share our expert guide to post-laser skincare. This will help you recover quickly and maximise your treatment results.
Before Your Laser Appointment: What to Avoid
In the three days leading up to your laser treatment, avoid the following:
-
Fish oil, vitamin E, and ibuprofen – these can increase your risk of bruising.
-
Prescription-grade or cosmeceutical vitamin A – do not apply the night before treatment.
-
Sun exposure – avoid direct UV exposure for at least two weeks prior to your session.
At Skindepth Dermatology in St Kilda East, we stress the importance of preparation. The better your skin is before treatment, the smoother your recovery will be.
What to Expect After Laser: Treat Skin Like a Sunburn
Laser treatments generate heat in the skin, which may vary in intensity depending on the type of laser and settings used for your skin concern.
After your treatment:
-
Use ice packs or cool compresses to reduce inflammation.
-
Avoid hot showers, heated environments, and any intense exercise for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
-
Expect a warm, sunburn-like sensation that may last anywhere from 1–5 days, depending on your skin type and laser depth.
At our Melbourne skin clinic, Dr Alice Rudd and our clinicians always explain what to expect based on the laser technology used and your individual skin profile.
Skincare After Laser: Keep It Simple
In the initial recovery phase, avoid active skincare until your clinician gives the green light.
Do use:
-
A gentle, hydrating cleanser
-
A soothing moisturiser
Avoid:
-
Active ingredients (retinol, acids, vitamin C, etc.)
-
Scrubs or exfoliants
-
Toners with alcohol or astringents
Once your skin barrier is no longer sensitive, you can gradually reintroduce your normal routine.
Sunscreen: Your Skin’s Best Friend
Post-laser, sun protection is non-negotiable. Always apply a high-quality sunscreen daily—even if you’re indoors.
Our top recommendation:
La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Light SPF 50+
This sunscreen is lightweight, non-comedogenic, and perfect for post-treatment protection.
Makeup After Laser: When to Apply
Try to avoid applying makeup immediately after your session. Ideally, wait at least 24 hours. If needed, opt for light, breathable coverage, such as a BB cream, to keep your skin calm and protected.
Healing Time: What’s Normal?
Most clients at Skindepth Dermatology experience 4–7 days of downtime, depending on the laser type and skin response. Stronger treatments may require a little more recovery time—but don’t worry, most post-laser effects are easily covered with minimal makeup.
Important Post-Laser Don’ts
- Do not pick or scratch your skin
- Do not exfoliate or scrub for at least 7–10 days, or until advised by your clinician
- Avoid harsh skincare products unless approved by your dermal specialist
Your skin needs time to heal and regenerate, so gentle care is essential during the first week.
