Are you unsure about which skincare products are safe to use during pregnancy? You’re not alone. At Skindepth Dermatology, we frequently hear from expectant mothers who are confused about what they can and can’t use—and in many cases, they stop treating their skin altogether. The good news is that safe, effective pregnancy skincare is possible, and our expert team at Skindepth—including leading Melbourne dermatologist Dr Alice Rudd—can help guide you every step of the way.
When should you modify your skincare routine during pregnancy?
As soon as your pregnancy is confirmed, it’s important to pause your current skincare routine and review which ingredients are safe. The two main ingredients to stop using immediately are: Salicylic Acid and Retinols (Vitamin A derivatives). These active ingredients are not considered safe during pregnancy. Instead, switch to a simplified skincare regimen that includes a gentle cream cleanser, hydrating moisturiser, and daily sunscreen. Some other active ingredients may still be safe but should be prescribed or recommended by a dermatologist or dermal clinician.
What skincare products are safe to use during pregnancy?
You can safely use a cleanser and moisturiser throughout your pregnancy. One active ingredient we encourage during pregnancy is Vitamin B (Niacinamide). It helps hydrate the skin, reduce fine lines, and promote a healthy glow.
Breaking out with pimples? Here’s what to do.
Pregnancy acne is typically driven by hormonal changes and often resolves on its own after childbirth. While many acne-fighting ingredients are not safe during pregnancy, we can still help manage breakouts using non-invasive, soothing treatments.
At Skindepth Dermatology, we offer safe options like:
-
Facials
-
Extractions
-
Soothing masks
-
LED Healite Therapy
These treatments help reduce inflammation, support cell repair, and keep your skin feeling refreshed and balanced.
Noticing dark spots or increased pigmentation?
It’s completely normal to develop hyperpigmentation during pregnancy. Increased melanin production can cause: darkening of moles, freckling, and melasma (patchy pigmentation on the face). Melasma often appears on the upper lip, nose, and cheekbones, and while it can be frustrating, the good news is that pigmentation usually fades naturally post-pregnancy. The best defence during pregnancy? Daily sunscreen use—rain or shine.
Pregnancy glow a myth? Here's how to revive your skin.
If you’re feeling dull instead of glowing, you’re not alone. While certain treatments aren’t suitable during pregnancy, there are still plenty of safe ways to nourish and brighten your skin.
Skindepth-approved treatments include:
-
Enzymatic Masks: Fruit-based masks that gently exfoliate and calm inflammation
-
LED Healite Therapy: Stimulates collagen and supports natural healing
-
Customised facials: Designed to hydrate, calm, and refresh your skin
These are safe for all skin types and can give you that elusive “pregnancy glow” while also offering a chance to relax.
Other ways to maintain healthy skin during pregnancy
Your diet and sleep have a huge impact on your skin’s health. While we understand how difficult this can be during pregnancy—especially with nausea, insomnia, or fatigue—doing your best to eat well and rest can go a long way.
Tips for glowing skin from the inside out:
-
Eat foods rich in antioxidants and omega-3s (nuts, berries, oily fish)
-
Stay hydrated
-
Maintain a consistent sleep schedule (and take naps if needed!)
