Even Celebrities Get Skin Cancer!

Last week, Australian actor Hugh Jackman revealed he had another skin cancer removed from his nose—his 6th or 7th. This is an important reminder that no one is immune to the damaging effects of the Australian sun, not even celebrities.

At Skindepth Dermatology in St Kilda East, we frequently see the long-term effects of UV exposure. For skin cancer, early detection is vital. Do not skip your yearly skin check.

What Kind of Skin Cancer Did Hugh Jackman Have?

Hugh Jackman has spoken publicly about being diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)—a common type of skin cancer caused by sun exposure.

For simplicity, we classify skin cancers into three main types:

1. Malignant Melanoma (MM)

  • The most dangerous form of skin cancer.

  • Can spread rapidly to lymph nodes and organs.

  • Often fatal if left untreated.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

  • Develops from precancerous lesions such as actinic keratosis.

  • Can spread, but does so less frequently than melanoma.

  • Requires timely treatment to prevent complications.

3. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

  • The most common and least aggressive form of skin cancer.

  • Grows slowly and rarely spreads.

  • Usually treated easily with minor surgery.

  • Still malignant—not benign—and should be taken seriously.

BCCs are often confused with harmless skin growths, but they are a form of non-melanoma skin cancer. Their metastatic potential is low, but they can cause local tissue damage and should not be ignored.

Sun Damage Starts Early

Most BCCs result from cumulative UV exposure, often beginning in childhood. The harsh Australian sun is a leading cause of these skin cancers. That’s why I always recommend:

  • Daily sun protection, even in winter

  • Wearing broad-spectrum SPF 50+

  • Avoiding peak UV hours

  • Wearing hats and protective clothing

Skin Checks Save Lives

The good news? Regular skin checks can detect skin cancers early, often before they become serious. Hugh Jackman sees his dermatologist every three months, a great example for all Aussies.

At Skindepth, Melbourne, our experienced dermatologists offer comprehensive skin checks using advanced diagnostic tools. Early detection gives you the best chance for effective treatment and peace of mind.

Final Thoughts?

Skin cancer doesn’t discriminate. Whether you're a celebrity or not, your skin deserves protection and regular checks. Let Hugh Jackman’s experience be a reminder: if you haven’t had a skin check this year, book one today at Skindepth Dermatology.
