Our skin naturally changes and evolves with age, and so should our skincare. At Skindepth Dermatology, we take a holistic and science-based approach to treating skin at all stages of life. As we age, two main processes drive these changes: intrinsic ageing and photoageing (also known as extrinsic ageing).
Intrinsic ageing is a natural genetic process influenced by your DNA, while photoageing is caused by external environmental stressors—most notably sun exposure.
Intrinsic signs of ageing include:
-
Thinning of the top layer of skin (epidermis)
-
Shrinking of the dermis and facial bone structure (causing sagging)
-
Fine lines and wrinkles
-
Pigmented spots
-
Fat loss in areas like under the eyes and around the mouth
Extrinsic signs of ageing include:
-
Thickening of the epidermis
-
Thinning of the dermis
-
Coarse wrinkles and deep lines
-
Uneven skin tone and mottled pigmentation
-
Skin growths like actinic keratoses
-
Collagen and elastin breakdown due to glycation
In our 20s
Your 20s are the perfect time to begin a preventative skincare routine. This is your best window to prevent photoageing, and that starts with daily use of SPF 50+ sunscreen.
Incorporating antioxidant-rich products is also essential—they help neutralise free radicals and reduce environmental stress on the skin. Preventing damage now is far more effective (and less costly) than correcting it later.
In our 30s
By your 30s, collagen and elastin production begins to slow. Dullness and uneven skin texture may become noticeable, especially if regular exfoliation isn’t part of your routine.
Now is the time to add vitamin A (retinol) and chemical exfoliators such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and pyruvic acid. These acids gently encourage cell turnover without the harsh scrubbing, which makes them ideal for sensitive or maturing skin. They help smooth the texture, stimulate cell renewal, and minimise early wrinkles.
In our 40s
This is when the intrinsic ageing process becomes more visible. Skin may lose firmness and elasticity, and fine lines may become deeper.
Your skincare now should be comprehensive, including:
-
Antioxidants
-
Vitamin A
-
Peptides
-
Chemical exfoliators
Peptides are protein fragments that help instruct your skin to behave more youthfully—supporting firmness and resilience.
In our 50s and beyond
By this age, sun damage from earlier years begins to show. Expect more pigmentation, redness, and actinic damage. Wrinkles deepen and appear even without facial expression.
This is the ideal time to consider advanced treatments like ALA/PDT (Photodynamic Therapy) at Skindepth Dermatology to target:
-
Sunspots
-
Pigmentation
-
Redness
-
Uneven texture
Your skin also needs heavier moisturisers and ongoing vitamin A use to help with hydration and repair.
We recommend: Biopelle Retriderm Serum
